Go-To Looks for Fall Fashion

Go-To Looks for Fall Fashion

YAY fall is on it's way! I love dressing for fall temperatures. Even better I love using my Go-To Looks because my fall season is CRAZY busy! A while back I started to notice that I was reaching for the same outfits when I was in a pinch. So I made a mental list (you can make a physical list, if you're Type A and download our Outfit Menu) of my go-to outfits. If I'm running late or just am not ready to be creative in the morning, I usually turn to these basics. (See Picking out your Outfit in a Pinch post for more tips. This is tip #2) Between back to school for my kids and myself (I am currently taking a few classes, as well) running my kids to activities, planning birthday parties and trying to figure out what to eat for supper all the while making sure everybody is getting along (which may be the most time consuming task with kids at times.)...AH....breath....I still want to look like I got a full night's sleep and pull off a great look. You know it gives a girl an extra confidence boost and just makes ya kick off your day right. Take a peek below.

Go-To Fall Fashion

Top Group: One of these is what I usually grab for any color skinny jean. This alone can be 15-20 different outfits. The three basic top combos are easy and go with almost everything. This makes it so easy to grab whatever color pant is on top of the stack and run. The statement necklace in the middle is colorful so it can go with any color pant. Even if the actual color isn't in the necklace it still works. Trust me! The tops all act as neutrals to balance out the loud color on the bottom. It's that easy!!

Bottom Left: My all time favorite outfit! This entire look is chic and oh so comfy! You can mix and match the scarf to create an entirely new look. The black leggings with the brown boots is a great contrast (See Black & Brown post) and the chambray shirt is perfect. You have to try this one!

Bottom Right: This over-sized sweater with skinny distressed jeans is casual, but not frumpy. The leopard print flat is the perfect detail. (if you are new to our blog, this shoe can go with ANYTHING! It appears in almost every Six Ways post) Love this look! This screams "I didn't try to hard, but I'm still super cute and stylish."

I hope this helps...Let us know what you like best.

Trend Watch: Graphic-T time!

Graphic-T time! I LOVE a great graphic-T! This is an easy way to add dimension to your look. I created a couple of looks (because it's easier than changing, and finding someone to take my picture in between chasing after a busy toddler and needing a leg cramp break because I'm expecting twins....ooo, sorry.)Where was I, o yes, I created a couple of looks below to show how a little detail can add a ton to an outfit. I chose neutral colors here, but FEEL FREE to add some shades! The first look I made a bit more chic, and the second is more casual. But look at the pop of detail instead of just a solid color T! It gives the entire look a different feel. There are many places to find graphic-Ts but one of my favorites is Forever 21. They are inexpensive and there is a ton to chose from. Follow the link to check it out online before you make a special trip.

Fashion Foundation: {Shoes}

This post on what you should have in your foundation closet for shoes has been soooo difficult for me to articulate and write. I cannot in any honesty sit here and tell you to only buy a set few basic pairs of shoes and make every outfit work with them. Why? Well--confession time--I don't really believe you can have too many shoes. There. I said it. I stopped counting my own pairs at 80. Yes. 80. If you could win a medal in clearance shoe shopping, I would have several gold ones. And I know that 80 is a big number for some of you but a tiny number for a crowd of you too. Own it and accept it wherever you are in the shoe realm. No judgement or snarky comments here. Now that that's off my chest I do want to actually talk about shoes for a bit. Shoes are a very personal thing to a lot of people. There are the people who are totally shoe-comfort people. There are those that suffer in their shoes for fashion. There are those that wear the shoe if it fits regardless of comfort or style. I am one of those that enjoys comfort but will totally suffer if an uncomfortable shoe makes an outfit outstanding. Shoes have the ability to take an outfit from blah to BAM in about 2 seconds.

There are four main types of shoes to keep in mind when you are out shopping. Having a nice variety in each category (3-4 of each maybe?....who am I kidding?!) will give your shoe foundation a solid start.

1. Boots: All types. All heels, heights, and colors. Let your boot socks peek out and you just mastered the art of adorable.

2. Flats: Comfort and fashion make nice and play in these babies. Invest in a great insole though. It will give your foot the proper arch that flats can sometimes, well, fall flat on. (EVERYONE needs a pair of cheetah/jaguar print flats. We firmly believe they go with just about anything and everything!!)

3. Pumps: Ditto on the boots. Love my black and nude pumps. I wear them all the time.

3. Sandals: Wedges, strappy, T-style, gladiator...on and on and on. Yum.

The biggest deal about shoes however comes in the next four items--regardless if we are talking boots, pumps, or sandals. You must consider these four things when buying any shoes and when choosing what to wear each day.

1. Heel:
What is your day going to be like? Will you be sitting most of the day? Standing? Walking long distances? What is the hemline of your pants? You should have several shoes that have different heel heights to accommodate your outfit and your lifestyle. Again, we strongly suggest investing in a stellar insole to maximize your comfort level while in heels.

2. Color
The color of your shoe can be the ONE thing that makes your outfit stand out. Wearing all black? Pop with a green flat or heel. Rocking a particularly loud colored outfit? Tone it down with a lovely nude pump. Accent with a cognac accessories including a great cognac boot and your whole outfit will look effortlessly pulled together. Try and find 3-4 pairs of shoes in universally flattering colors and they will make your outfits look amazing. My four favorites? Mustard, green, red and an animal print. Add in a few neutral leather tones and you will be SET.

3. Purpose
Let's be honest. A shoe can ruin an outfit too. If the shoe does not match the purpose of the outfit...ouch. You could have a perfectly pulled together outfit and then throw on the wrong shoes and the whole thing goes down the drain. For example: Adorable lace tee, jean jacket, boyfriend style green capris and.....running shoes. Really? Running shoes are for RUNNING. They have a purpose. Use them for that purpose. Want comfy tennis-like shoes to finish off this outfit? Try a pair of Vans or Sperrys instead. Similarly, don't wear an adorable dress and then finish it off with a pair of Keens. Gracious. Some of you are thinking...but my Keens (or tennis shoes) are comfy. I get it. I don't disagree with you. However, I do think you can have comfort AND style at the same time.

4. Weather
There is nothing worse (fashion wise) than choosing to wear flats on a rainy day only to step in a puddle and ruin your shoes AND the hem of your pants. Trust me, I've been there and it bites. I now have no problem mucking around in my Bogs and then changing into my cute flats once I am INSIDE. Keep your shoes from being ruined by watching and paying attention to the weather. Be willing to keep your feet warm when warranted and break out the cute shoes when they are in no danger of getting snow and salt damage (this is a huge reality where I am from). I learned the hard way to protect my shoe investment.

If you were starting from scratch, the pics of shoes above would all be a great start to building a shoe foundation. Is there a shoe you can't live with out that goes with everything? Let us hear about it!

Six Ways to Style! {Wine Pants!}

This is a HUGE color this fall season! It has so many possibilities for creating different looks. Animal print, color blocking, leather, and stripes; the list goes on and on. This color is the perfect choice for some chic fall fashion! If the skinny jean isn't for you, then find a great fit in a different style. We hope to give you some inspiration on the color not just the cut. Although we do love our skinnies!! Maybe just try on a pair...

Also, we will see you back here for a new Six Ways post in two weeks. Taking a little break during a busy photography time!

Make sure to pick your favorite look and let us know below.

Get some Wine skinnies for yourself!
We've created a couple of links to places that are currently carrying this color pant. Click away.
Gap     Old Navy     The Limited     Kohl's

1. Cheetah Comfort
I know you can't see it to well, but this is a oversized flowy sweater. It's perfect to throw on with a pair of skinnies. The skinnies give you shape so the lack of shape in the sweater doesn't' make you look frumpy. (See Styling your Shape post for more details.) A cheetah scarf for a little piazza and heels to finish it off. Flats would also go great. Choose practically for your day and your plans.

Sweater: TJ Maxx (similar)
Sleeveless: The Limited (similar)
Scarf: Heartbreaker (similar)
Shoes: Target (same)

2. Olive this color!
This olive/army green color is everywhere right now. Including here! Love it!! Red and Green are complimentary colors according to the good ole color wheel. (See our Color Blocking blog for tips on that) These shades are perfect for transitioning into cooler weather. The taupe cardigan evens it out the colors, and the booties add the perfect amount of edge.

Cardigan: Gap (similar)
Sleeveless: Old Navy (similar)
Boots: Kohl's (similar)
Necklace: Origami Owl

3. Fall for Denim
This wine color and mustard compliment each other so beautifully! It's the perfect combo for fall. Denim works as the neutral and pulls this look together. Of course the leopard print flats adds the perfect amount of detail. If the day is a little chilly, grab a printed scarf too.

Jacket: Old Navy (similar)
T-shirt: Target (similar)
Flats: Target (same)
Necklace: Target

4. Bet your Booties!
Love leather and lace together!! This is the ideal amount of masculine and feminine in one outfit. The lace detail gives the precise amount of delicateness while the leather jacket adds just the right touch of structure. The booties continue with this already amazing look. Any time I can add an anchor piece to an outfit I am going to--check out the necklace! Love!

Jacket: Target (similar)
Sleeveless: Limited (similar)
Boots: Good Will $2.99! (same at Target)
Necklace: Limited

5. Blazer of Glory
This is a basic shirt and blazer combination. (One of my Go-To Looks ~ Blog coming soon.) This works well with any color of skinnies or accessories. Love stripes for texture and the necklace adds class. The flats have a touch of bling to pull it all together.

Blazer: Target (similar)
Shirt: Gap (similar)
Flats: The Limited (similar)
Necklace: ? Really, really old!

6. Graphic Chic!
Another amazingly basic, but chic look. Similar to 5, this pair can go with countless outfits. The graphic T dresses it down a touch, but adds a ton of style. The cream blazer over the white tank is just enough of a contrast to compliment each other. The sparkle flats are the perfect choice to kick it up a notch.

Tank: Old Navy (similar)

Pinbuster: Ruler Growth Chart

Growth Chart made into DIY
(or Do It by Husband)
growth chart
Theirs
One day I was going to check my, at that time, 12 year olds' height. We made sure her feet were against the wall, she was standing up straight and tall, I went to make my little mark AND SHE WAS OFF THE CHART!! Our growth chart that we bought 12 years ago only went up to 5 feet.  We didn't even think it would be an issue. Well, I started searching for new ideas and I fell in love with this chart from Pottery Barn. Cha-ching. I know, but then I started thinking that it really didn't look too hard to make. I showed my husband, who happens to be pretty handy, and he says oh yeah that wouldn't take much. So we made a trip to Mills Fleet Farm and picked up what we needed. A 6ft 2x10 board and address numbers. Total...about $12.00! We have a neighbor that has a router, so my husband made all of the cuts and I painted in the lines with black acrylic paint. He distressed it using a handheld torch and hitting a heavy chain against it. (What a smart guy!) We added the numbers and it is BEAUTIFUL. I transfers all of my kids' measurements onto it and I am IN LOVE with it! Take a peek for yourself....

Ours

I may decide to add more distressing, but for now, I think it's perfect! Keeping tract of your kids' height has never been so stylish.

Trend Watch: {Faux Leather Pants/Leggings}

I picked up a pair of faux leather leggings at Forever 21 ($13.50) a few weeks back. I was slightly hesitant about wearing them at first. I put my brave face on and wore them out to an anniversary dinner with my hubs. They were unbelievably comfortable and super stylish. Of course, they are edgy and give off a certain vibe no matter what you pair with them but they are sooo fun! I even convinced my gorgeous sis to grab a pair too! (Have you worn them yet girl? Huh?) There is definitely a Six Ways to Style post coming up on these babies! Check out some famous ladies pulling them off and then me attempting to rock them on my anniversary!

Six Ways to Style: {Mustard Skinnies!}

I really had an aversion to this color when it first started popping up EVERYWHERE about two years ago. I'm sorry but it reminded me of breastmilk baby poop. Gross, I know. It took me a while to warm up to it. I started out small with a cardigan and eventually bit the bullet and bought mustard skinnies. I find it completely hard to believe that I used to think this color was less then appetizing. I adore it now and am shocked often at how many fashion items it goes with. Maybe you need to get over your own aversion to this shade! Go for it!

Get some for yourself!
Marshalls (corduroy Levis-Holly)
Herberger's (Emily)

1. Stripes for the Win
I have a fear of being too matchy-matchy but this sweater was calling my name. I have paired it with dark skinnies as well but it just works so well with these mustard pants. The chambray acts as a separator between the two pieces and gives the outfit a casual vibe. Nude flats allow all the attention to be on the stripes. Find a pattern or striped shirt that has a hint of mustard and rock the two together!

Chambray: Kohl's
Sweater: Limited
Shoes: Kohl's (similar)

2. Laid back leather
This neutral shirt/jacket/shoe combo can go with any color of skinnies. This is one of my go-to looks. Gray, army green and leopard with any choice of color pop on the bottom. What's not to love?

Shirt: Target (same)
Jacket: Marshalls (similar)
Shoes: Target (same)

3. Animal Elegance
I firmly believe that animal print can go with just about anything. This print has a brown undertone that balances perfectly with the mustard pants. I threw on the pearl necklace to add an air of elegance to the whole combo.

Sweater: Kohl's (similar)
Tank: Maurices
Necklace: Charlotte Russe (similar)
Shoes: Von Maur (Sperry's)

4. Must do Mint
I always forget to put together mint and mustard. It's one of those combinations that you have to see it to believe it. It totally works! I chose a camel cardigan and cognac flats. The cream statement necklace brings the entire outfit up a notch.

Sleeveless: Marshalls (similar)
Cardigan: Target (similar)
Shoes: Garage Sale $1!
Neckalace: Groopdealz

5. Craving Chevron
Chevron is definitely the pattern of the year. I have been adding to my life in home decor, office supplies, and of course- my closet. I adore the stark contrast between the print and the pants. It totally pops! Let's take it over the top and throw on a sequined cardi! Love!

Cardigan: New York and Co
Top: TJ Maxx (similar)
Boots: Charlotte Russe (similar)

6. We "rust" do lunch!
This is a very fally look. The rust and mustard compliment each other beautifully. I added a polka-dot cardigan for some detail and of course...leopard print flats. (I'm telling you, they go with just about everything!)

Shirt: Target (similar)
Cardigan: Old Navy (similar)
Flats: Target (same)
